ADHD
The questions that arise immediately when your child is diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are… Why me? Why my child?

There are children with Specific Learning Disabilities (S LDs) such as difficulty in language, in writing, in math, etc. However, with timely diagnosis, and appraisal by experts and the right support from teachers and parents, they can succeed and do well. Children with Learning disabilities often feel frustrated, helpless and rejected. They must be assured that they are not dumb or lethargic. Be honest with your child. Don’t say there is nothing wrong. It is also important that your entire family understands ADHD and its impact on you and your child as they are your biggest support system. Moreover, teachers play a key role in your child’s development so reach out to them before your child even walks through the classroom doors.

Make it a habit to ask your child about his experiences at school each day. Schedule a regular time of day for study. Provide an area that is quiet as children with ADHD can get easily distracted.

Some children have problems with short - term memory so keep instructions short - the one sentence rule.

Give them breaks from assignments that require extended concentration as they have difficulty sustaining attention for longer duration.

Be Patient and Positive. Set short, achievable targets and reward them with praise even for very little progress.

Shower them with smiles and hugs as they require a lot of physical contact.

Give them special responsibilities to boost up their confidence.

Talk about current affairs and encourage them to ask questions and search for answers, taking the time to figure out correct answers.

Encourage them to participate in school extra curricular activities which are vital for their emotional well being. It also helps them feel less isolated.

Encourage social skills which are essential virtues in building self esteem. They may want to make friends, but often do not know how to socialize.

Play with your child. Generally they respond well to games which are new, interesting, quick and changed often.

Remember, many well-established treatment options are available.

ADHD Moms’ available at http://www.facebook.com/adhdmoms , is a unique online community where mothers can go online and share knowledge with other parents in similar situation.

Coping with a learning disability is indeed challenging .With the right support and treatment, however, they can make excellent progress and grow up to be happy and productive adults.
